What's for Dinner?

Fun Stuff

Tuesday, November 30, 2004

I had an AWESOME meal of hummus and bread and tomato-potato soup. This was a benefit for the Divorced Dad's Network at Mr. Toots in Capitola. The room was hot -- not temperature-wise but laughter-wise -- and everyone killed. Nancy Aaronson with her soup can tap shoes is always a big hit. Dr. Scott Smith rocked! I closed the show and had an easy time of it because everyone else before me had totally killed. The weird thing was that there were way more women than men at this event. Those Divorced Dad's work quick. Oh, and Madame DeFarge was there, but she was doing macrame, NOT KNITTING!

I hope everyone had a great Turkey Day. We had a crab feast day instead. It was awesome. But on Monday I had leftovers. And several Boddington's at the R&C. This is one of the few places that has Boddy's on draft, so it's my kind of place. I stayed for the whole show, something most comedians don't do there, and had a great time sitting in the back making snide comments. Some drunk guy kept embarassing the woman he was with (Kristen) and it was kind of annoying, but also par for the course at the R&C.

I made my world famous (okay, maybe that's going too far) Hungarian Paprika Chicken. In the Schlemmertopf. I love using that thing! Afterwards, Jimbo, Edo and I headed out to the Rose & Crown where I put in a quick set. It was a great post-Monday Night Football crowd. I went up after Dick Kiss. That's a hard (get it?) act to follow.

Got a last minute opportunity to co-headline at Rooster T. Feathers Open Mic Showcase. So dinner was a hotdog and a Bass . . . again. It was a great show. Sal Calanni, the other headliner, did a great job, and newbie Dean Inouye really impressed me. And I got a chance to try out the new kitten and pimple jokes (no, it's not a joke about a kitten with a pimple).

I didn't perform or anything today. I just wanted to point out that I got a hateful email from an asshole named Noah Mamo (assuming that's his real name; my email program told me it was probably a fake) just because the little sissy boy wasn't quick enough to sponsor the Deivi Cruz page on BaseballReference.com. What a loser! This guy must have the smallest penis in the world! And he probably voted for Bush. And, he probably voted for Bush just because his parents did, and not because he has a mind of his own or anything.

Edo and I went to Ti Couz and had lovely crepes for dinner. Then we walked the six blocks to the Mock Cafe. It was a great crowd for such a tiny place. John Trujillo was the host and did a great job. I especially enjoyed Mick Spiegelman's set. My kitty material seemed pleasing to a group of young women up front. Thanks!

I rushed out of the house without eating. I was uncharacteristically nervous about performing at the Improv. Jeff Applebaum had a great set, and I thought "wow, they're nice and warmed up, this is going to be sweet." But instead it was sour. I got too much into my head and not into the audience. One of the classic blunders, the most famous of which is never enter into a land war in Asia. I did get a lot of laughs, but I didn't feel great about it. So I went to Roosters where my buds were having the SFCC Grad Show, and I had a blast there and forgot about my bad set by the end of the night. I love my comedy buddies.

Two margaritas and one enchilada later, I had a miserable set in front of the remaining members of Nora Lavelle's family. Grace White bailed in the middle of her set, it was that bad. Kudos to Tom Miller for trying, but that place just doesn't seem to be a comedy place. But it is a great sports bar and Mexican restaurant.

I actually liked this place! I had leftovers for dinner that night before heading out to Cafecito in downtown San Jose. I was the "headliner." It was a small crowd, but they were a great crowd. I enjoyed teasing the young man who wears his sunglasses at night. I used to love that song, before I grew up and developed grown up tastes in music.

The world is a weird and wonderful place. I got a late call to be a part of a comedy showcase at the San Jose Improv. It was a great line-up with Kurtis Matthews, Anatoly Brantvein, Karen Smyth, and Michael Slack. Carmen had a birthday party. Everyone had to deal with that. I had chicken tenders and Bass for dinner. It was delicious. Because someone else picked up the tab. Cool, huh? The other part of the good news is that I got hired to work at the Improv next Wednesday. Come on out to see the show, or watch this space.

I had a delicious dinner of Ma Po Dofu, guava cake, and crow. It was my quarter-final round at the San Jose Improv. I had great support in the audience, and a tremendous set. Unfortunately I made the mistake of going over my time. That's a pretty big mistake actually, and cost me. I would have come in first, but got disqualified for going over my time by 26 seconds. That may not sound like too much, but it's nearly a half a minute, and when you're only doing eight minutes, that means I went a full 6.25% over my time. Still doesn't sound like a lot, does it? But trust me, it is. Thanks to Edo, Jimi, Richie, Tonya, Lisa, Bill and all the SFCC folks that came out to support me. And thanks to the couple that couldn't stop gushing about me in front of the Improv manager. That helps.

More dinners . . .
