What's for Dinner?

Fun Stuff

I love the Blue Hawaiian pizza at The Blue Rock Shoot. So I had some. The crowd was relatively small, and right up front was a group of older folks who might not have had the energy to laugh. They were great, though. They were good sports and didn't mind when the comedians gibed at them a bit. They loved Jen Kober. Because she's jolly.

After a very long drive back from LA in 4th gear pretty much the whole time (long story), we got Thai food (actually, I got Thai food) and that was my dinner before heading out to the Hotel Utah for Jen Kober's showcase. The Hotel Utah has one of the most beautiful bars I've ever seen, and it's quite long too. Yum. Just think of all the beers that could be lined up on that bar! It's a very cute set up there at the Hotel Utah, and the crowd was great. I had a blast. I laid down on the floor to do the "sexercise" bit, and they loved it! Nora and I felt a little bit squirmy because of a rabbi-looking dude who I'm sure is very nice but kind of has that lingering look until it's really uncomfortable, you know? I left early. I was exhausted!

Quarter finals of the California's Funniest Female competition. We ate there at Martini Blues and had the bruschetta -- which is delicious! -- and some kind of pasta. As soon as it arrived I realized that was a stupid thing to order since I'd probably spill it all over myself and look like an idiot up there but then I realized I didn't need to spill all over myself. So I didn't eat much, but I did have a great set. It just wasn't great enough for me to move forward. That's okay, I had a blast just doing the competition. (That's what losers always say.)

I had something to eat at home, like leftover pizza or something, but I also had curry chips at Fibber Magee's in Sunnyvale. It was another one of those crowds that maybe wasn't there to see comedy. We had to turn off the big screen tv. That was harsh. Actually, it was left on with the sound muted for a while (during my set) but before I was offstage someone had shut it off. I was totally at a loss, but just kept plugging away and I was having a great time because I was pretty sure no one was listening to me at all, so why care what I said or did? Then they started to laugh. I even got an applause break. These guys/gals are all/mostly Irish-Catholic, and the pope joke tore them up. I bet some of them are still laughing about it.

The Canvas Cafe. I had a fancy-schmancy grilled cheese sandwich and a chai. They have the best food there! And drinks too. And the atmosphere is laid back and funky and welcoming. Go there! I tried out my new "fag hag" material and they loved it. Good for me. I like it when, unlike the fated "slug" material, something I like is liked by others. Kudos to Susan Alexander for another great performance space in San Francisco.

I ate a bag of chips as I waited to perform at the American Cancer Society Relay for Life. Sal Calani and Christine Gelat were the other two comedians. We performed on a little stage under a tent near one of the goal posts of a regulation football field surrounded by several lanes of track (made of a really squishy material, like the people movers in airports in Asia, and really fun to walk on). It was freakin' hot! I needed my 50 SPF that day. Some critters came up and nearly stole the show from Sal, but he handled those furry miming creatures well. Just like the other day, it had to be a 100% clean show, so I dusted off some older stuff, and it worked great. I need to pull it out again every now and then (as the bishop said to the chorus girl).

I was honored to perform for 10 minutes at the Parents Helping Parents (PHP) luncheon. My role was sort of to get everyone's attention at the beginning, which by definition means I didn't have everyone's attention at first. Or at all. They were still arriving and salads were being placed as I performed. But that was okay. The people who were able to give me their attention were very appreciative and good laughers. I gave away a lot of magnets that day I tell you! I had the Cobb Salad, which came with some kind of soup that was creamy. It was at Lou's Village, which I've passed lots of times, but I never went in. That place is huge!

San Jose Improv Comedy Showcase. Bob Brindley was the host and Lori Chase closed the show. It was a lot of fun, but mostly because of some really hot and easily amused women from Santa Clara University. It was somebody's birthday. They were awesome. We stood outside and chatted and laughed for a long time afterward. Lori and I thought they were adorable. I didn't really have dinner. I had a nice big Korean meal for lunch.

Leukemia and Lymphoma Society fundraiser at Rooster T. Feathers. HB brought me some mahi tacos from Baja Fresh. If you're going to eat fish tacos, you might as well eat mahi tacos. The crowd was small and quiet, but afterwards swore they were highly entertained. Too bad about the turnout. This was a marvelous opportunity to give. Please give to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. For Lisa. Anyway, I've responded well to things people in the audience yell out before, but I never felt comfy just asking someone in the audience something and commenting on it (we call that "riffing"). But tonight I was determined to try, and I must say, the "havva knees" line slayed me, so it must have gotten a giggle or two out of others. Too bad you weren't there to hear it.

More dinners . . .
