Wednesday, March 30, 2005 Chicken tenders at the good ole San Jose Improv. Yummmmm. It was the SFCC grad show, and I had a great time. Tommy Smith was the host, and it's always nice to get a great big bear hug from him. Everyone did a great job. Thursday, March 24 through Saturday, March 26, 2005 Since I didn't take a break between work and the show at Rooster T. Feathers, I mostly had peanuts and/or hotdogs at the show. Friday was good Friday. Thank god the pope is still alive. I let the audience know it was okay to have the hotdogs 'cause you can't really call that meat. Brian Malow was great, but I was sick as a dog and kept forgetting to mention at the end of the show that he had his CDs for sale. Finally got it right last show on Saturday. "Better late than never," I tried to convince him. But we get along great with Brian. Edo and he went off on this big thing about evolution. I never heard of a Creationist Jew, but I suppose there is such a thing. Brian, however, is not a Creationist Jew. Just a regular Jew. Monday, March 21, 2005 I had potato chips, Boddy's and shame for dinner at the Rose & Crown. Sunday, March 20, 2005 My first ever visit to beautiful downtown Vallejo. I think I came in the back way or something. I stopped for a Carl's Junior burger on my way out there. Not something I normally do, but I was hungry. The Mira Sunday Comics is a great little show put together by SpiritWalker. Ross Turner was the host. The audience was light, but very appreciative. The only negative part of the experience (besides the drive to Vallejo, of course) was that the theater is REALLY cold. Especially down in the green room. And I was down there alone for a while; it's a little scary. Not in a spooky way, but kind of the way your grandmother's basement is a little scary. But I got to sign the Wall of Fame! Friday, March 18, 2005 I did a guest set at Rooster T. Feathers in front of Tom Rhodes. We love him. And he loves us. Tommy tells some great stories, and he and Edo really hit it off talking about all sorts of obscure issues. I did some newish (not a typo, I don't mean Jewish) material that got a great response. But mostly it was great to have Tom Rhodes tell me that my writing is creative and tight. I have a brother that's tight. Most of the time. And when he's not, he's frugal. Oh, and I didn't have dinner. Again. No wonder I can't lose weight. What? Wednesday, March 16, 2005 I parked in the Stockton-Sutter garage and made the trek to 50 Mason, stopping on Powell for a slice of pepperoni. It's hard to stare down a homeless guy when you are carrying a pizza. Hey man, I don't care what you're going to do with the money. It's your body, your life. I'm giving you money because I have it and you don't. Simple as that. But, I'm not stopping every two feet to shell out quarters. That's just a time-efficiency thing. So, I have a quota. One homeless guy/gal on the way to the club, and one on the way back from the club. One of the funniest things that happened that night was the woman who asked, "is that your soda?" referring to a soda that was half-drunk and didn't have a cap on it which was sitting on the sidewalk behind me. "No, that's not my soda." "Can I have it?" "Knock yourself out." The audience was comprised primarily of students from Salt Lake City, UT. I thought maybe they were all married to each other, or at least engaged, but no. How surprising! Stereotypes NEVER seem to be right anymore. What's happened to our country? Most of the rest of the audience were art students from London, who drew us the whole time we were on stage. I felt like I was at the Peterson trial. The drawings were pretty good. Dan Edwards wanted to keep his as his new headshot. Tuesday, March 15, 2005 Mixed Nuts: Comics on Meds hits San Francisco. I had crab cakes and a beer at the Green Room Comedy Club, in the Cannery at the wharf. It was a great show. I got to see Pamela for the first time in a loooong while. The audience was small, but appreciative. Everyone had a great set. Poor Reannie was sick as a dog but still had a great set. Howard Stone was the host, and Doug Ferrari closed out the show with a bang. And, we made a little money. I love it when I make a little money. It happens so rarely. Saturday, March 12, 2005 Day two of the Modesto gig. Edo and I had a great big lunch before heading off on a 3-hour motorcycle ride through gold country. It was a beautiful day. I mention the lunch (I had clam chowder, a veggie burger, and potato salad) because that was the only dinner I got that day. Saturday's show rocked! The audience was about twice as big as the night before, and I was in the groove. If you want to see a tape of me performing, that's the one to see. (Bookers only, please!) But, we were so whipped from all the dancing and partying and staying up late the night before, I just headed right on back to the hotel after the gig and fell fast asleep. Forty-one-year-old women -- especially those of us who are out of shape -- have no business dancing and partying all night, and certainly NOT two nights in a row. Cain and Tobe shared some great stories about Richard Pryor and Paul Mooney. What a treat. Friday, March 11, 2005 I HATE rushing! But, yet again, I'm arriving in Modesto just in time to make it to my gig at the Fat Cat. On the other hand, I don't suppose there is any good reason to get to Modesto early. There's one of those big 1950s style signs across the main street that says: "Modesto. Water. Wealth. Contentment. Health." Contentment? That's all they are striving for? I'd rather have drama. Which is why I so enjoyed the evening. But, I digress. First I should say that Edo went out for a pizza while I got ready, so I shoved two slices of veggie pizza down my throat before leaving for the show. That's always a healthy option, and puts me in the right frame of mind to perform. The feature was Tobe Hixx, and the headliner was Cain Lopez. They were both great. And it is very rare that I get to hang out with one crazy M-Fer, let alone TWO crazy M-Fers. John and Larry were hilarious and bought a bottle of Petrone for us to have shots after the show. Melanie and Stephanie are twins who, surprisingly enough, are not gay lesbian twins who do it with each other all the time. Much to the chagrine of the male population of Modesto. We stayed up until 5am talking and smoking and whatnot. Never mind about the whatnot! Saturday, March 5, 2005 I had leftover whatevers before heading up with Tina to the Women Who Kick Comedy Butt show at the famous Purple Onion. What a surreal night. As usual, Reannie got a stalker almost immediately. She has all the luck! Do you think the stalkers are avoiding married women? I hope not; That's discrimination. Then, we had to wait to get into the place because the ITALIAN CLOWN TROUPE wasn't finished yet. That's right, I said ITALIAN CLOWN TROUPE! The funniest image was of the clowns leaving the theater, and there was one woman who was like 3 feet tall and was walking with a huge fake boat around her. What the faaaa? During my set, the music spontaneously began to blare "Girls Just Want to Have Fun." What the faaaa? And for some unknown reason, no one knew how to turn it off. It took a long time. Yet, I still only got my measly 5 minutes. Well, I suppose the audience was spared at least two minutes of stupid cat jokes. P.S. It was a great show, and Grace White did a great job of pulling the whole thing together. And, I have to admit, we are some of the comedy-butt-kicking-est women I know! More dinners . . . |
