Saturday, January 29, 2005 Oh My God! How fun! I got to open for Will Durst and James P. Connolly. James P. and I go way back to like November when he was at Roosters and I did PR for him. Will and I go way back to the time I mailed him a photo of an billboard seen in Germany. The campaign was for some brand of water (wasser) and was similar to the "Got Milk?" campaign. You need to know that "durst" means "thirsty" in German. It was such a great night and we all had a lot of fun together back stage. We decided that you should never eat a chicken killed on a Monday or a Friday. A Tuesday 10 am-killed chicken, that's what you want. Oh, and Edo and I had dinner at some hotel next door to the Marin Showcase Theater. I had a salad and some of Edo's soup. I was so nervous, I'm surprised I kept it down. Wednesday, January 26, 2005 The last Rooster's Open Mic before the big Amateur Comedy Competition. I was glad to get the spot, since I'm not in the competition this year, so this was my last time on the Rooster's stage until my week there March 24-26. I had a hot dog for dinner (did you know that most hot dogs have stuff other than meat in them?) and "closed" the show. Tuesday, January 25, 2005 It's kinda weird when I don't perform for a while. Not that it effects my performance in a major way, but it does give me the jones for the stage time. The Blue Rock Shoot has a brand new stage, complete with red velveteen curtains. I had a Blue Hawaiian pizza, which is basically a Hawaiian pizza with blue cheese on it. I loves me some blue cheese. What a fun show! Thanks to the folks that came out to see me. Knowing that I have "fans" warms the cockles of my heart. A cockle is a mollusk, often edible, that has two heart-shaped shells. And those are in my heart?!? Eww. Wednesday, January 12, 2005 Finally! All those weeks of calling at exactly 3 pm on a Wednesday finally paid off, and I got a 5-minute spot in the Cobb's Showcase! Every club has their own "game" for how you get in, and this is the game for Cobbs. I don't mind -- the hardest part is just learning what the rules are for each place. It was very exciting. Since I went straight from the day job, I didn't eat dinner again. But, I did have two delicious ginger ales while there. Yum. Ryan Stout was the emcee, and the theme for the night was "favorite 80s movies." Mine was The Breakfast Club. Tuesday, January 11, 2005 Rain storms the night before kept me from the long drive up to the City for my Club Deluxe gig. So, Sean Stryker and I decided to go up to the open mic at the Canvas Cafe instead. They have WONDERFUL food at the Canvas. I had a salad that had blue cheese in it, then I tried to kiss everyone. Not many takers. We kinda left early, but I did get a chance to catch my buddy Vlad's set, and Jen Kober, a fast-rising comic in the SF scene. Sunday, January 9, 2005 My first paid gig of the year. Dinner was homemade French Onion soup, which I had slaved all day at the stove over (actually, it's quite easy; we follow the Jacques and Julia recipe). Then off to the Crow's Nest in Santa Cruz to open for Stu Stewart (very nice guy from Michigan -- not that I don't expect folks from Michigan to be nice; Edo's from Michigan) and Mike Moto, with whom I had worked before. The Crow's Nest is notorious for being a tough room. So imagine my surprise when I actually killed! Thanks to those who bought me celebratory drinks. In retrospect, I wish you hadn't, but I sure appreciated it at the time! Monday, January 3, 2005 Happy New Year! This was my first time on stage in over 3 weeks! It felt good to be back. As per usual when I go straight to a gig from work, I had nothing for dinner. But I did have a Boddy's after I got there. Rose and Crown has Boddy's on tap! And comedians get a drink for free! Can't be that. That's better than dinner any day. And probably more nutritious. Here's the thing about an open mic. It's open. That means everyone gets a chance to perform, even the "head wounds" talked about on the SF Comedy Board. I don't mind them at all because I'm a laugher. I laugh when they're funny, and I laugh when they're not funny, because that's funny to me. It's not mean, it's entertainment. The key thing is that the audience should know what they are getting into when they go to an open mic. And if it is top-notch entertainment they are looking for, how about paying to go to a comedy club? |
