What's for Dinner?

Fun Stuff

Finally! I made it to Club Deluxe. Sean picked me up from work and we carpooled. I didn't have anything for dinner. You'd think I'd be a waif given how many times I don't eat dinner. But don't worry, I more than make up for it with late-night snacks. I gotta cut that sh-t out! Laurie Kilmartin, who had been at Roosters that previous week, came in to do a set. Sean and I learned a very important lesson. If you show up on time, they make you go first. Apparently lots of other comics had already figured that out, and didn't bother to show up until about 10 or so. Didn't we feel like dorks! So, after humiliating ourselves in front of 2 audience members and about 5 other comedians, we gave up and went home, tails between our legs. But it's not like I had my tail between his legs or anything. We each had our own tails between our own respective legs. Finally got to see Will Franken, after hearing so much about him. Just a snippet, so hard to judge, but I laughed a lot during his set. So did Laurie Kilmartin. She has a great laugh.

Shrimp cocktail and excellent company at PepperBelly's in Fairfield. Rode up with Brian Malow and Doug Ferrari, the co-headliners. Two shows, both were a blast. They have big blue drinks served in fish bowls at PepperBelly's. Now that's a club that knows how to party!

Rarebit at the Rose and Crown. With Boddy's on tap, of course. Edo thought the rarebit was disgusting, but what does he know about melted cheese? He's only half American. By the way, I've come up with a plan to make the Bald Eagle an even greater symbol of America. Melt some cheese over its head.

Cafecito. I had a delicious veggie burrito -- not the as big as my head kind, though -- and something called a white chai, which was creamy and sugary and perfect. Sean Stryker's napkin fish was my favorite moment of the evening.

San Jose Improv. Burger, fries, and Bass. And a great show with a truly funny host, my pal Anthony.

Oh My God! How fun! I got to open for Harland Williams and Larry "Bubbles" Brown at Pepper Belly's in Fairfield. Harland is amazing. He is so good at crowd work. I'd love to develop that skill, but I'm still afraid of the audience. I mean, there's a lot more of them than there are of you. Edo and I shared a combo fried things platter and some crab cakes. Bubbles is great. Edo and I still can't stop going "Maaah" every so often. Harland signed my CD "to Beth McGee." It's sort of a long story. Send me and email, and I'll bore you with it.

John Dekoven's showcase at the Main Street Brewery in Pleasanton. Pleasanton is very cute, with one of those floating "Welcome to Pleasanton" signs over the main street, which is called Main Street. I had to hold back my urge to run through the town shouting "Merry Christmas Building and Loan!" I had mozarella sticks and beer for dinner. The mozarella sticks seemed homemade, rather than those mostly bread things that you get at other places. You'd think homemade would be a good thing, but these were way too salty. Oh, I ate them anyway; I just needed a little more beer than I thought I would!

It's my birthday! Edo and I had a nice dinner at Max's Cafe. I had a pasta dish with brie in it. Sounded better on the menu than it turned out to be. Roger Walco, newly back from his harrowing experience in India during the Tsunami, joined us. It was a good show at 50 Mason. Justin Scales wowed Roger and Edo. I bummed a cigarette off a guy named Zak, while a guy named Zach was performing. Weird, huh? And everyone in the audience got a lollipop to celebrate my birthday!

More dinners . . .
