November 30, 2003 You wouldn't believe what I had for dinner. These little deep-fried Rueben balls -- I'm not even sure how they made them! Also jalapeno poppers and crab cakes and -- you guessed it -- Bass Ale! This was at a wonderful open mic at Sam Morgan's Clubhouse Inn in the Cheswick/Harmarville area. Mom and sister Gwen came along for the show. Would have had a bigger crowd, but it was the night before the first day of deer hunting season, and nearly everyone else was getting up at 4:00 am to kill Bambi's mom. Met a funny and nice comedian from LA, Seth Buchwald. Thanks to Doug Joseph for giving me the stage time! November 25, 2003 Beef-a-roni. Don't hate me because I have bad dietary habits. Later washed it down with a Sprite at the SFCC Graduation Showcase at the SJ Improv. I volunteered to do only 5 minutes because we needed the time, and because I wasn't too happy with my set anyway. Then I left early in order to torture myself by getting up at 4:30 am to fly to Pittsburgh, PA for Thanksgiving. You guess which part was most torturing (not counting my performance!). November 19, 2003 Yummy, yummy in my tummy! Dig those dogs at Rooster T's! Coupled with curly fries and cheese sauce. Another nutricious meal accompanied by Bass Ale. Last open mic of the year at Rooster T. Feathers Comedy Club, and several of my comedy buddies, including Sharman Baciagalupi, Malcolm Grissom, Sandy Stec, Bernie Sinsay and Dan Edwards were showing their stuff. I debuted some new material while coincidentally something funny must have happened out in the audience, because people started laughing! I ignored them and kept going with my routine. By the time I finished, the laughter had died down. November 12, 2003 Beef stew. Hearty, warm, delicious, right out of the can beef stew. Reminds me of my childhood. Later, at Pepper Belly's I also had some snacky items. First time for me at Pepper Belly's in Fairfield. Thanks to my comedy buddies Dan Edwards and Bernie Sinsay for putting the road trip together, and thanks to Nancy for hanging in there. Special shout out to my best bud Jimi Dixon (check out her Web site at www.corporatehitman.com) who showed up and brought Julia and Steve with her. You are awesome Jimbo! "Let's give it up for Helen! It's great to see female comedians." Who's Helen? Apparently, I am. November 9, 2003 Lean Pockets. I love those. I can eat like 10 or 12 at once. And they're good for you, too, especially if you're watching your waistline. Since I've been eating Lean Pockets, I can see it much more clearly. Not a big crowd at the Ugly Mug Cafe in Soquel, but a nice crowd. Truly nice. Would be nicer if they tipped. Andrew Nelson went up for the first time ever, but he did not pull his pants down. Too bad. Erikka I., Sharman B., Sandi Selvi. and I provided the "feminine mystique" while Mark B. was the local flavor. Michael Slack was, well, Michael Slack. November 7, 2003 Stuffed green peppers, but that's not important right now. The more interesting question would be "What's for Breakfast?" French toast, fruit, coffee cake, coffee, and comedy!!! I attended a morning event at the SJ Improv to raise money for victims of the wildfires in Southern CA. Much of the rest of the audience were drinking cocktails or beers at 6:00 am, but I had the feeling they were used to that. The event was broadcast on KSJO, and SFCC members Eli Tapley, Reggie Steele, Michael Slack and Ross Turner were among the comedians joined by headliner Craig Shoemaker. It was awesome, and our guys did great! November 2, 2003 The cook didn't show at Roosters, so it was nachos and salsa all the way around. Oh, and Bass Ale of course. The special grad show started at 5:00 pm, but silly Bethie thought it was 8:00 pm and had promoted it that way. I'm sure that's the reason why no one came to see me. (It can't possibly be because no one came to see me.) I went first, which is always delightful, and got a full ten minute set in. Rose W., who brought the most folks in, was really funny. I'd go to live local comedy even if I wasn't performing, because I love to watch the comedians just get better and better. The next Robin Williams, Steve Martin or Chris Rock is probably someone I already have the privilege of knowing and hanging with! |
