January 31, 2004 Girl Power Comedy Night benefiting the Divorced Father's Network. What an awesome organization. If you are going through a divorce or divorced already and have children, check these people out! They do great work. Dinner was two raspberry Italian sodas and some bread with pesto and hummus dips. Sharman had some too, but without the sodas. We all did two sets tonight for two different shows, and everyone rocked. Once again, Melissa Gans was the hostess with the mostess, and there were terrific performances by Simone Alexander, Nancy Aronson, Sharman Baciagalupi, Melanie Borba (who I've never met before, but she is FUNNY), and Mari-Esther Kaplan. Musical accompaniment by Noel Murphy (Yay Noel!) and an hysterical guest set by Tammy Shea. Nancy said she was going to tell Kurtis on Tammy because she got on stage. Tattle-tale! January 30, 2004 Great night at Caffe Sapore, with Melissa Gans back on as emcee. Everyone had a great set, and I ate a delicious salmon bagle with nice thin slices of red onion and capers. I'm so sophisticated now that I'm in California. I remember when capers were something Dastardly and Muttley would pull every Saturday morning. Afterward I stopped at the studio for a good long look at Sami's antlers. January 29, 2004 Caught the show at Rooster T. Feathers Comedy Club. So, I had Bass Ale, a hotdog, and nachos for dinner. Three of the four major food groups (which of course are salt, sugar, alcohol, and cheese). If I had only put maple syrup on my hotdog, I would have had them all covered. The funniest thing I think I heard all night was Randy Harkin's line, "There are two ways to show your patriotism in America today. Wave a flag, or keep your f--ing mouth shut!" I nearly wet. The rest of the crowd was palpably ambivalent. January 28, 2004 Chips, guac, and hefeweizen. Leaves you a teeny bit gassy, but worth it going down. Great night at Luna's with Bob Brindley, Anthony Hill, Tim O'Dell, Tanya Houseman and Sean Hetherington. Packed house and a great group of people. Thanks Tim for sharing the Slewhouse (not sure of spelling) info. It saved my butt. Afterwards, Sean, Richard, Jason, Ross and I went out for a couple of beers. We discussed LTR among other things. I felt really hip. January 27, 2004 "Beth, you're on second tonight." What? Ooops. Thanks to Anthony Hill for helping me write my killer opening line. You rock! Thanks to Jeff Applebaum's friends who sat up front and laughed at everything. Small crowd, but I still felt okay. Now, how can we get more people to show up on Tuesdays? Well, if you come in any Tuesday in February when I'm performing, and you paid for your entry, see me after the show for a free "Life is hard. Laugh it off." T-shirt. While supplies last! January 25, 2004 Prawns with walnuts. I'm used to the honey kind. This was with ketchup. But, still good. Karin Babbitt, who I'm now taking additional classes from, also enjoyed it! I'm so in awe of fellow classmates Kurtis Matthews, Nancy Aronsen, Rickie Stimbra and Michael Slack among others! I know I'm going to learn a lot from this bunch! January 21, 2004 My first time at the infamous Sea Bisquit. No real dinner, but a totally awesome ginger latte. It rocked! So did the room. My colleagues Erikka Innes, Maggie Newcomb and Desiree Tinder were fellow first timers at the Bisquit. The stand in emcee said, "man, we never see so many women comedians here, and you guys are actually funny! Most women comedians are like, 'I have my period,' and'I hate men,' but you guys have actual jokes!" It was quite the compliment. January 16, 2004 Early dinner was sesame calamari at Rock Bottom Brewery. I'm a card-carrying mug club member! Then it was off to the city with my buddy Paul for a SF Sketchfest event, Will Durst with 18 Mighty Warriors. The Mighty Warriors are an Asian American sketch comedy troupe, and they were pretty freakin' funny, particularly for people like Paul and I who have spent a lot of time in a variety of Asian countries. We liked the FIFA Meeting Number 25 sketch and the Chinese American tourist in China who keeps running into hot dog vendors. Will Durst was funny as ever, but stand up comedy as part of Sketchfest? Mary and Tony joined us, then invited us up to their high-rise pad for a little clam linguine and cribbage. I only had linguine, because cribbage gives me gas. January 14, 2004 I had some really nasty sushi from a place in downtown San Jose (I won't mention the name, but it starts with Tengu). Okay, I won't go there again. At Rooster T. Feathers I had some nachos and Bass Ale. It was a great little show with a great little audience. Thanks so much to Jimi, Richie, Cheryl, Tanya and Janet for showing up in support. Great emcee job by Mike Holley, and top-notch performances by wholesome Maggie Newcomb (who brought her wholesome family), Jonathan Dippert, Anatoly Brantvein, Scott Fell, Justin McClure, and Sharman Baciagalupi. The bandaid on my nose is now just a little one, and I was happy to learn it was just a freckle! January 6, 2004 Dinner was homemade fettucini (well, the fettucini came out of a bag) carbonara. Did you know that stuff is made with raw egg? It's delicious. And as my friend Jonathan Davis once said, "there aren't enough things with peas in them." It was the night of our first SFCC event of the new year. Everyone did a great job: Bob Brindley, Jane Sotansky, Bill Maloney, Tanya Houseman, Anatoly Brantvein, Karen Smyth, Richie Stimbra, Mari-Esther Kaplan, Kurtis as Emcee and Ryan Stout in the headliner slot. Tammy worked the light. We had a great discussion about baby dangling before the show. In general, we are opposed, but we wonder how the dangle-babies feel. Oh yeah, and I've got a big honkin' bandaid right across my nose. More later. |
