August 9, 2003 Depending how you look at it, dinner was either the turkey sandwich I had around 3 pm, or the one cold slice of cheese pizza I had at 11 pm. Or, it could be the three Bass Ales I had in the interim. Second to last performance last night of The Gaslighter's Melodrama/Vaudeville. Corporate gig, so half the audience left at intermission. What the hell, they didn't pay for the tickets! Only slightly demoralizing for the actors. We had a pretty good attitude: "Let's get through this and get the hell out of here!" According to PH, the quote of the night (perhaps of the run) could be "I'm drowning in my own ass sweat!" It was attributed to me, but to be fair, I stole that line from Sean Hetherington. (Thanks Sean, wherever you are!) But it sounds like something my brother Eric would say . . . often. August 6, 2003 Tonight was the big grad show at Rooster T. Feathers. I was so excited I didn't eat anything! (This blog is starting to make me realize that I have poor nutrition habits.) There were over 100 in the audience, and almost 20 percent of them were there just for me! Cool! Thanks so much! I had yet another opportunity to share the stage with some of my favorite funny people: Mike Lema, Eric Dollison, Michael Riley, etc. All the comedians did a great job. I picked up at least one new fan: A woman stopped me in the bathroom after my set and said, "I wanted to hear more from you." I was a little bit confused since I had just come out of the stall, but I figured it out soon enough. August 4, 2003 The best dinner I had in the last few days was Friday night at Ti Couz in San Francisco -- crepe complete! Edo & I were in the Mission for a screening of VideoMix 3 at Pond Gallery. Friends Taly and Russ Johnson had a piece included entitled "Theme Park Fun" which was the best of the whole tape. Saturday I had a sourdough chicken club from Jack's on my way to The Gaslighter. Mari Esther Kaplan showed up in the audience with her mom and sister-in-law. Thanks for the support! Sunday and Monday were my big audition for an actual paying gig! I brought a visual aid. I'm feeling pretty good about my audition, but what do I know? It was nice to run into Eli Tapley, Bob Brindley and Howard Stone at the auditions -- helped me relax. Although the call was for high-energy performers, so maybe relaxing wasn't such a good idea. At any rate, I ended up having Chex Mix for dinner both nights. No MSG! July 27, 2003 Pleasure Pizza. East Side (uh huh). With artichokes and something else I can't remember. As usual, the crowd at the Santa Cruz Coffee Roasting Company was awesome. Ricky Stimbra is doing a great job. Eric Dollison also killed (again). It's such a satisfying venue to work. Maybe not for Jesus. He showed up. It was a little bit of a downer. But then Kurtis (Jett) Matthews stepped in and gave an inspirational talk that had many of us near tears . . . it was that bad. July 24, 2003 Nothing. Although Jonathan Dippert enjoyed hot peanuts and some sort of dried meat product. By the time the show was over, the market was closed and we had to settle for a gas station. In downtown Sacramento! Not a smorgasbord of a selection, really. Technically, I guess dinner would have been the junior mints we shared in traffic. We faced a small, but friendly and funny crowd who put up with heat (no AC) and darkness (no lights, w/ the exception of a huge spot light trained on the performers, burning each of our retinas to crisps). There are some pretty funny people up in Sacramento. And one nasty ass black cat, with some sort of a hump and stitches or something. She loved Eric Dollison. He is funny. |
