What's for Dinner?

Fun Stuff

Tuesday, August 31, 2004

I had a wonderful Unagi Bowl (that's barbecued eel over rice for those of you not "into" Japanese cuisine. It was great. I also had a sesame tofu soup that was okay, but not stellar. Glad I didn't like it all the way, 'cause that would make me a granola, or a lesbian, or a lesbian-granola. Not that there's anything wrong with that. I just don't want to have to eat that much tofu on a regular basis. But I digress. Dinner was at the really cute Bazaar Cafe in San Francisco (near my university, USF) where I performed along with a slew of great performers: Doug Ferrari, Mark Nadeau and The Meehan Brothers. I can't get enough of those Meehan Brothers, but I think they need to tone down the brogue; Sometimes even I in my drunken stupor can't understand. And as many of you know, I used to be an Irish interpreter to put myself through Comedy College.

Edo made a very sloppy vegetarian sandwich with green zebra tomatoes, hummus, and avocado on 847-grain bread. It was not only messy, it was very delicious. Then it was off to Rooster T. Feathers where I had the awesome opportunity to host two shows. The theme was "Last Comic Standing," and comedians Vladimir Khylnin, Chris Voth, and Rob Cantrell performed. The audience was killer, and the new red curtains are awesome. Great job Jimi! Vlad is the man with the plan, the host with the most, and the pope with the dope. Chris is very quiet and I didn't really get a chance to chat with him. Rob Cantrell is a great big sweetheart. Watch for him as he returns to Last Comic Standing on NBC for LCS 3!

Another great SFCC All-Stars show! This time at Cafe Sappore with a packed room. Edo came along for dinner and we both had quiche. Now, I never really claimed to be a real man . . . Everyone had a great set, and we had a very special guest set from Gene Pompa who was featuring at Cobbs and graciously agreed to give us some time. What a bonus treat for all the fans that paid only $5 yet got an $18 show!

More of a late lunch than dinner, I suppose. I had the Shepherd's Pie at Fibbar McGees. I didn't know shepherds were in season this time of year. That night was our most awesome Mixed Nuts: Comics on Meds show at Rooster T. Feathers Comedy Club. We had a very healthy crowd and the show was awesome! We are all so excited about future opportunities with this show. We'll be at the Fringe Festival in SF next. Thanks so much to Edo, Kurtyka, Katie, Lisa, Wendy, Cheryl, Bill, Peter, Jennifer, Mari, Kate and Corinne for coming out to support. The biggest treat of the evening for me was meeting Doug Ferrari and him telling me that he liked my stuff. Cool.

After taking a week off from stand-up, I headed to the San Jose Improv to support the San Francisco Comedy College grad show. (This could be your year to get on stage! Click here for the Comedy College Web site.) I had a nose bleed on the way in. Is that too much information? Improv nachos and Bass were my dinner that evening. Just as I was taking a big bite of nachos, I was called up to do 5 minutes on stage. The sets I am not at all prepared for are sometimes my best sets. Thanks to Kurtis for giving me the stage time.

There's a reason they call it Friday the 13th. I mean besides the fact that it's a Friday and the 13th. This was the gig from hell, at Winter's Tavern in Pacifica. I don't think it's as much a biker bar as it is a drinker bar. Some people there had started drinking way before I did, and I started at 12:30 in the afternoon! Or at least, I should have. After being thrown to the wolves, I did have a really nice time hanging outside with Kevin and Howard. Thanks for making the night worthwhile you guys! Oh, and I had some nice healthy Taco Smell on my way there. Which, by the way, I plan to begin boycotting because they don't serve root beer. How can Taco Bell call themselves American, and not serve rootbeer? Someone call Homeland Security to check into it.

Open mic night at Rooster T. Feathers. I had the yummy delicious can't be beat nachos that they serve up there. It was a great show. Lori Chase, a comic out here from New York, totally rocked the house. I wasn't too shabby myself. Thanks to Betty and Philip for coming out to support me. And I didn't even know they were there!

Sharman Bacigalupi and I on a ROAD TRIP!!!! WHOOOOOOO!!!! We were driving, and talking and driving some more. It was MAJOR! Anyway, I love the Comedy Outpost in Victorville. Well, maybe the crowds weren't as stellar as promised (another lesson in the importance of marketing), but those that were there certainly came to laugh. I closed the show with a 35 minute set, and Sharman rocked in her set. Hope you got a great tape! Dinner was shrimp scampi and a garden salad that only took 2 hours to get to my table. Well, I wasn't going anywhere. The totally messed up part of the trip was that the Friends of the NRA were across the hall at a convention. I didn't see a single person of color in that room. I think NRA stands for Not Racially Accepting.

I had one of those new potato burritos from Taco Smell. What was I thinking? At least the All-Star show at 50 Mason was good. Not a huge crowd, but a great show, with two delightful audience members on holiday from England. It was a great opportunity to make fun of dental care in England.

It was one of those nights where the only dinner I could get was beer. It was good beer, served just the way I like it, as beer. My first time at Rudy's Pub in Palo Alto. Tyson Hendricksen has done a great job of building this room. The audience is there to laugh. Well, they are there to drink and laugh. What's wrong with that? Don't judge my people. I particularly enjoyed Michael with the Room 222 afro. Don't ever get a gerri curl, man!

Back at the Blue Rock Shoot in Saratoga. Dropped in for a quick set before heading home to make dinner that no one showed up for (except me of course, since I made it). It was a delicious pasta sauce made from the Sun Gold tomatoes in our back yard. The person that didn't show up for dinner really missed out!

More dinners . . .
